Death and Other Details: Slow-Paced Murder Mystery Filled Of Brillant Plot-Twists! (Spoiler Alerts)

Disclaimer: Review with Spoiler Alerts!

Update: Finishing my post, I founded out that Hulu has canceled the show after one season! Would had like to seen more!

Rich guests on a luxury cruise. Potential business plans to be created. A series of murders take place, connected to a major mystery. And then there is Victor Sams!

When it comes to murder mysteries, I enjoy watching and reading them. There has been plenty of murder mysteries shows that I have watched such as Only Murders in the Building, CSI, and Perry Mason (1957). I enjoy watching these mysteries because of the plot twists, but it’s also fun coming up with theories and solving the mystery yourself. Looking for the next mystery to watch after A Murder at the End of the World, I came across the trailer for Hulu’s Death and Other Details. Intrigued by the title and having looked at the trailer, I tuned in to see what the mystery had to offer. Death and other Details, which premiered on January 16th and concluded on March 5th had a total of ten episodes.

I did enjoy watching the show, even amidst all the negative reviews, but I do have one negative critique though. When it comes to mysteries, I enjoy it when the conflict and stakes are heightened up. But when it comes to Death and Other Details, I felt that it took slow paces. Even though some revelations were revealed in the beginning, the stakes didn’t rise until episode six. My opinion is that the conflict should have been heightened around episode four and five. For example, I felt that some of the stuff that happened in episode five could had been taken out. Now, I know some people like slow mysteries, but I prefer mysteries such as Only Murders in the Building where the conflict always builds up early.

Even though that is my negative critique of the show, there are two things that I like about the show. One thing that I liked about the show are the plot-twists and revelations. Watching the show, some parts of it were surprising, as I didn’t guess it. For example (Spoiler Alert Ahead), I was surprised at who Victor Sams (Aka villain of the show) really was. Turns out Imogene Scott’s, one of the main characters, supposed dead mother, Kira, was Victor Sams. Faking her death, Kira took the alias of Victor Sams, getting revenge on the Collier family and others. It was surprising to see that it was Ms. Scott as her death looked very much real. Also, it was surprising to find out that (Spoiler Alert Ahead) that Anna Collier killed her own mother, which was revealed in the finale. I figured that Kira (Aka Victor Sams) had something to do with since other guests were killed under her order.

The other thing that I liked about the show was the character backgrounds. During the ten episodes, the show allowed us to meet some of the characters. One example is Leila, the wife of Anna Collier. From the beginning of the show, we see that Leila is paranoid and believes she’s being tracked electronically, which made me wonder why? Later on in the series, (Spoiler Alert Ahead), it was revealed that Leila was investigating Victor Sams (Aka Kira), leading her to getting in a traumatic car accident. Surviving and knowing that another attempt could be made on her life, Lelia acts this way. Another example is the character Celia Chun, a billionaire that is concocting a business proposition with the Collier family. Later, it is discovered that (Spoiler Alert Ahead) Chun is getting revenge as well, since her husband died from Captionem Blue, a chemical used in the Collier’s factories. The Collier family paid her and others to keep silent about the ordeal. So Chun vowed to make a name and one day use her money to buy them. Overall, the backgrounds of certain characters, especially Leila and Celia, added to the plot and made the show intriguing. It kept me guessing and wanting to know more about them, especially the other guests.

Now, I don’t know if Death and other Details will be renewed for a second season, but the story could be continued. I’m not going to go into full details, but Imogen, Leila, and other characters stumble upon a dead body during the final minutes of the finale. The show’s direction could be headed towards solving murders with different motives, such as Only Murders in the Building. Even though it may not be connected to Victor Sams (Aka Kira), she will still be brought up or present due to plot points in the finale. Also, Imogen and the other characters will still be reeling over the traumatic events that happened.

If Death and Other Details is renewed for season two, I will be watching it. But if it’s the case, I hope the showrunners pick up the pace with the conflict and stakes. If you decide to watch Death and Other Details, let me know what your thoughts are on this slow-paced and plot-twist filled mystery. All episodes of Death and other Details are streaming on Hulu.
