PLL (Summer School): Entertaining, Bloody, & Mysterious

PLL (Summer School): Entertaining, Bloody, & Mysterious

Even though I haven’t seen all the seasons of PLL (Pretty Little Liars), I became a fan. Mysteries are my favorite and I was intrigued by the mysterious A. As the seasons developed, I began to get disappointed with the plot, especially with the identify of A.D (Spencer’s British Twin Sister). After the series ended, I did watch PLL: The Perfectionists, which I thought was okay, but it was cancelled after one season. In 2022, HBO MAX (Now MAX) created a new version of the show, which has been intriguing me! Even though the show presents a new A targeting a new set of girls, the stakes are high. This new A stalks and tries to kill the girls, while they uncover dark and distributing secrets which are all connected. The second season is even crazier as the girls have to deal with the dilemma of summer school and a new masked figure, bloody rose, targeting them. I will not be giving away major spoilers in this review in case you want to watch this madness for yourself. So without further ado, I will present my opinion on this entertaining, bloody, and mysterious second season.

First, I want to start off by saying that I adore the girls, Imogen (Bailee Madison), Tabby (Chandler Kinney), Faran (Zaria), Mouse (Malia Pyles) & Noa (Maia Reficco). All of the actresses play their parts well, which is a reason this show is great. It’s great getting to see a group of young women supporting each other amidst the terror, fear, misogyny, etc. that they face. Also, these young women are not afraid to fight back, especially in season two. I’m not going to spoil anything, but you definitely don’t want to mess with them.

In the new season, we did get some new characters such as Johnny (Antonio Cipriano) & Christian (Noah Alexander Gerry), who are love interests for Imogen and Tabby. Now, I was suspicious a few times about them, as I wondered if they had anything to do with A or Bloody Rose (Spoiler: Didn’t have anything to do with the sinister plot). But I really did enjoy their characters as they were sweet, genuine, and supportive towards Imogen and Tabby. Both girls deserve some happiness after dealing with a traumatic experience last season, which I will not spoil. Also, during the second season, we saw the return of Dr. Anne Sullivan, who originally appeared in the original series. Dr. Sullivan, who was the original PLL’S therapist, returns to help the new PLL’s with the ordeal from season one. Since the original PLL has been off for a while and I haven’t rewatched it, I did not remember Dr. Sullivan, but I liked her character. She literally fulfilled her role as a therapist and was there for the girls, understanding their trauma. Even though her character was secretive, making me suspicious, she had good intentions and has suffered trauma from the new A as well.

When it comes to the plot of season two, the show is still good, but it’s insane. As I mentioned before, this season has new villain, Bloody Rose, who is creepy and deranged. Trying to identify who Bloody Rose is, all of the PLL girls face violent and emotional turmoil by the crazed villain. As Bloody Rose tries to hurt and kill the girls, other townsfolks face their demise, making this season bloody. We do find out who Bloody Rose is in the finale, especially the accomplice that they had. No spoilers, but I was surprised by who the accomplice was, but not so much by who Bloody Rose was. Both of them have issues, but the person who turns out to be Bloody Rose has it out for the girls, particularly Imogen and Tabby. Overall, I enjoyed the plot of this season as I still felt entertained and shocked watching the show.

Watching both seasons of this show, I agree, especially with other fans, that this new version of PLL is better than the original. Even though this new series has a slasher and bloody theme, I enjoy the mystery plot behind the show. And as I mentioned earlier in my review, I really like the new PLL girls and can relate to them on different levels. Even though the show hasn’t been renewed for season three, there has been rumors that it will, as a new title for the show has been listed as a trademark. Hopefully, MAX will renew the show, as I have seen many people enjoy it. Now, when it comes to season three, I know that the girls will be dealing with A again. During the season, there were some reasons as to why I thought the problem of A was over, but they made a surprise return in the last few seconds of the finale. Also, depending on how the third season will start, we will see the girls as juniors and adjusting to things going on in their personal lives. If there is a season three, the blood, secrets, etc. will continue to flow, but the girls will be ready to fight.

You can watch Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin & Pretty Little Liars: Summer School on MAX. The original PLL series is also available to watch.
