Rebel Ridge: A Not to Miss Action & Thriller
Rebel Ridge Poster

Have you ever watched a movie that you were invested in? That you didn’t want to stop watching. Well that has happened to me, but Rebel Ridge is an example. Rebel Ridge, released on Netflix on September 6th has people raving online. The majority of the time, Netflix will release lackluster films, but Rebel Ridge doesn’t fall into that category. The man behind the film, Jeremy Saulnier, presents a worthwhile and thrilling movie that people will enjoy. So without further ado, here is why Rebel Ridge is a not to miss action and thriller.

One thing that makes Rebel Ridge stand out is the casting for the film. Since Rebel Ridge debut on Netflix, people have been swooning over the actor that plays the titular character of Terry Richmond. Aaron Pierre, a British actor, has been trending not just for his good looks, but for his exceptional acting skills. Seeing Pierre play Malcolm X in the National Geographic Genius series, I was impressed by his flexibility, charisma, speaking, etc. And Pierre delivers again in this film, playing a former marine and a close quarters combat expert. As I mentioned, because of his flexibility, Pierre was able to transform into a firm and authoritative character that is seeking justice. One of the main villains in the film, Chief Sandy Burnne, is played by Don Johnson, known for playing Crockett in Miami Vice. Johnson plays a true villain in the film, cruel and crooked, as he takes necessities to get Richmond out of the corrupted town. Johnson played the part well, as I rooted for Richmond to take him down. Lastly, another character that stood out to me was Summer McBride, played by AnnaSophia Robb. Robb, who has starred in Bride to Terabithia, Race to Witch Mountain, Soul Surfer, etc. plays a courthouse employee who helps Richmond. I’m not going to spoil all the details about Robb’s role in the film, but she plays a compelling and compassionate character. Watching the film, I was rooting for Robb’s role, especially because of her backstory.

Moving on, another thing that was great about the film was the plot. If you have done your research or seen the trailer for the film, Richmond is on the quest to bail out his cousin from jail. This leads to the corrupt police seizing the thirty-six thousand dollars, putting Richmond’s plans in jeopardy. Wanting his money back, Richmond takes matters into his hands, battling the corrupt police and unraveling conspiracies. I’m not going to spoil the big plot points of the film, but the plot is entertaining. It was awesome to see Richmond act, especially after all the crooked things that the police were involved in. The film also stands out to me, as there is a mystery unraveling. Enjoying mysteries, I was curious about the police’s involvement. What were they hiding? What type of corruption they were involved in? Also, looking at the film, I was happy to see that the major plot point started the film. You don’t have to wait, which kept me engaged and thrilled to see what happens next.

One last thing that I want to focus on that I like about the film is the action scenes. Now there could had been some more action, but the action was good enough. There is one particular action scene that people are talking about, but I don’t want to spoil it. I’ll just say that Pierre shows off some of his martial arts skills. And towards the end of the film, there is a big showdown between Richmond and the police officers, which is thrilling. The movie can be violent in some instances, but it’s not graphic and there is no death. I like that Saulnier went this route, as it makes the movie more creative. Also, I do prefer less graphic violence, which is why I enjoyed the film more.

Overall, I enjoyed watching Rebel Ridge. If your into watching action and thriller content, this film is for you. I do want to mention that the film ends on a cliffhanger, as we don’t know what happened to Richmond, McBride, etc. Many people are calling for a sequel, which I would be happy to see happen. It would be great to see the aftermath of the events or Richmond on a new action thriller quest. No matter what, I will be following Pierre’s career as he’s a great actor with more roles to come.
